Apsara 2012 “An exotic era of dance” undoubtedly gave patrons their money’s worth last Saturday night, more than living up to the pre-show hype and expectations of a new and modern dance production.
The event was held at the National Cultural Centre before a packed audience. The stage décor, done by Andrew Arts, wowed the patrons as the curtains were pulled. The shimmering display will definitely leave a lasting impression on those who graced the well-organised and executed dance production.
The two-hour production saw a cast of more than 60 dancers performing classical, filmi, bangra, salsa, hip-hop, Marathi, Arabic/Turkish, and fusion dances, to a name a few, that left the audience with a glow on their faces.
The production was directed by Chandini Ramnarain and  choreographed by Padmini Rambalak, Kiran Mattai, Marcia Akeung, Fernando Yow, and Lucria and Devon Rambalak. The evening got started with a brief welcome by Gavin Ramnarain, who then turned the audience’s attention to a projector screen which relayed various messages from Apsara’s founders and cast members who gave insights into the production.
During the just over five-minute pre-show video, the director of Apsara, the choreographers, and newcomer Hashim Ali, all promised that the 2012 production will be one of the best ever, and their words came to pass.
The first dance of the evening set the stage on fire and gave a sneak preview of the evening’s splendour. The dancers’ elaborate costumes and exhilarating dance moves were the order of the evening in spite of a few minor glitches, and there were dance routines to suit every member of the audience.
Another energetic dance routine that was enjoyed by the audience was one led by Fernando Yow and Devon Rambalak; it unquestionably had the audience laughing in appreciation. Kiran Matai and her dancers also performed an outstanding modern ‘mudgra’ dance that wowed the audience.
The highlight of the evening was a special appearance by Miss India Worldwide 2012 Alana Seebarran, who performed several beautifully-executed dance routines that left the audience speechless. During the show, Seebarran also recounted her participation in the prestigious pageant in Suriname and spoke briefly on her recent trip to French Guiana and more so, her future plans.
The curtains were pulled on the production leaving the patrons in their seats expecting more. They were encouraged to look out for Apsara 2013.
